"Free VPN" sounds great, but such services are often more trouble than good.

Free VPNs like to collect user data and sell it to third-party advertisers. Users have no idea that they are victims of data theft. Moreover, free VPNs can literally bombard an unhappy user with a huge amount of advertising so that he buys something from a partner company. Such a referral-type business actually pushes VPNs to engage in spam at any convenient opportunity.

Lifetime subscription

A lifetime VPN subscription can be considered perhaps the user's worst dream.

Due to the highly competitive nature of this industry and the desire of many VPNs to register on different Islands and remote corners of the globe, buying such a subscription will often be a very bad decision.

VPNs are strategically placed outside countries where there are strict data protection laws. This is specifically done to protect the privacy of users. But this policy has a downside – such countries will not be able to hold VPN liable for breach of contract. And if the VPN suddenly decides to disappear or change the subscription terms, it will be almost impossible to return the money.

Fake services

New players are constantly appearing in the market, and it is not surprising that some of them are not clean on the hand. Such services come on stage on a white horse and pompously advertised, but in fact it's just a fraudulent scheme to take money from unsuspecting customers. Sometimes it happens that a person makes a subscription, but does not receive any service at all – just a one-day scheme for a quick squeeze of money.

VPN subscription through intermediaries

If you want to purchase a VPN, purchase it directly from the vendor, not through a reseller site.

Intermediary sites are always a potential problem. Often they offer all sorts of discounts on VPNs to attract customers. At the same time, they can simply collect confidential user data at the time of entering payment details.

If even identity theft doesn't scare you, consider that third-party sites won't respond to any of your complaints. They have no control over the VPN service they offer, so instead of solving your problems they will simply refer to the service itself. And a VPN service can send your complaint back to a third-party site because you purchased a subscription there. And the victim of this vicious circle will be only you.

Fake reviews

You will be amazed at how many fake reviews are circulating in the software industry, which is very dependent on good reviews.

Good reviews are so important that other VPN services contain an army of hundreds or even thousands of praisers. The service can either post fake reviews itself, or pay others for them. This can be a simple scoring, reviews of trial versions or even detailed reviews that praise this service. As a result, the service can have an excellent average score on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, so it will attract masses of new users.

What's more, some VPNs go further and create their own review sites, where they critically review their competitors while extolling themselves. If you think that a review about a service is too good to be true, there is a possibility that the owner of the site is this very service.

Summarize

The best way to find a quality VPN is to conduct a personal study. Look on the Internet for the cons and disadvantages of this service, as far as its promises correspond to reality. A truly good VPN won't be free, so don't believe offers of "high quality" services with zero price tag.
